Today, I have another bird related craft to share with you. Spring and Easter both bring nests to mind. So I wanted to show you how to make my terracotta pot bird nests. I really am fond of terracotta pots. But they aren’t the best containers for plants because the pots dry out so quickly. However, they are great for crafts like these bird nests.
For these nests, find some old pots. If you don’t have old pots hanging around then new will work as well. This time of year you can find them on sale at your local garden center or even at craft stores. For the eggs, I am using walnuts. But you can certainly use plastic eggs that are on sale right now.

Supplies to make Painted Pot ‘Nests’

- acrylic craft paint or any type of paint (leftovers work great)
- sand paper
- walnuts or plastic eggs
- modge podge
- glitter glass or craft glitter
- book pages
- basket filler
Steps to Make a Terracotta Nest with Walnut Eggs
- Clean up your pots if necessary. Use a scrub brush to clean off dirt and debris. Give a quick rinse if needed and allow to dry.
- Using a pastel colored paint such as white, pale blue or green, give your pots a light coat. This does not need to completely cover the pot.
- Once your paint is dry, lightly sand areas to give it an old rustic look.
- Paint your walnuts in a contrasting spring color such as white or robin’s egg blue. You can leave the eggs plain or you can coat your “walnuts” with a layer of modge podge and then cover with glitter. Allow to dry.
- To make book page filler, cut pages of an old paperback book into 1/4 inch strips. Accordion fold each strip to fill the top of your nest. No need to fill the whole pot with strips. Fill your pot first with a layer of basket filler and then top with your strips. Tip: When folding strips, you can actually fold about 4-5 strips at a time. This will speed things up a bit.
- Top your nest with your walnut eggs and your springtime nest is ready to go.
I hope you enjoy making these nesting pots. You can make them in different sizes and use them for your dining table decor. You can set them on your porch. Add them to your garden shed decor. Give them as gifts. Every time you see them you will be reminded of the beauty of spring.
These are so cute and I love the walnut egg idea!!

Tania,
The nests are so easy to make but I love the walnut eggs best. And they are so easy to find around here…in the stores, on the ground or on a tree in Autumn.
