How to make a New Spring Wreath

Now that Spring is here it’s time to refresh our home decor.  Time to replace heavier bedding and blankets.  It’s time to set up the outdoor cushions.  And it’s time to replace the sweater wreath.  So let me show you how to make a new spring wreath for your porch or front door.

There are so many wonderful spring flowers that you can use to make a new spring wreath.  You can use forsythia, snowball flowers, lilacs, dogwood flowers or my favorite, peonies.  The craft stores have such a wonderful array of spring flowers to work with.  These days, imitation flowers look so real that it can be hard to tell them apart unless you are touching them.  So go shopping and find some beautiful flowers to use in your wreath.

Supplies you need…

For my wreath I am using fuchsia colored peonies and some white ranunculus.  These were actually leftover from my daughter’s wedding last year and so are bringing me 2 benefits.  First, I am using up what I have available and second, it will provide a sweet memory of her wedding every time I see it.

If you don’t have time to make your own spring wreath, but you want to refresh your front porch you might enjoy one of these wreath options.

Steps for making your Spring Wreath…

Step 1:

Start with your flowers by trimming the stems about 4 inches below the flower head.  Use wire clippers to cut through the plastic all the way around and then cut through the wire.  It sometimes helps to bend the wire back and forth if your wire is especially sturdy.

Step 2:

Twist a doubled strand of floral wire into a loop.  Attach this to the back of your wreath for hanging.

Step 3:

Attach the green floral wire in 12 inch lengths to the base of the flower heads by looping the wire around it several times.  Twist the wire tightly to secure.

Step 4:

Begin to attach the flower heads to the front of the wreath form.  For large flowers, weave the 4 inch stem into the form.  Use the floral wire to attach the stem to the metal form.  Continue adding a variety of flowers and greenery to fill in your wreath.  If you are using multiple colors, start with the largest flower first and attach them all around.  Next add in a smaller flowers in contrasting colors.  Finally fill in with greenery and accents such as the baby’s breath that I added last.

Step 5:

Make a bow out of your ribbon and use floral wire to attach it to the top of your wreath.  Hang your wreath and then adjust the flowers and the bow to make sure everything is evenly distributed.  Hang your lovely spring wreath on your front porch for a burst of spring color.
