10 Ways To Decorate with Bird Decor

Even though Spring is officially still a week away, Daylight Savings Time always feels like the start of the new season.  It’s staying lighter longer and the days are a “little” warmer.  As spring starts to slip in, I begin to think about birds.  I’ve been hearing birds outside my window lately.  And I am waiting to see the first robin.  As I wait it’s a good time to decorate with bird decor.

Early in the spring, I like to start decorating with birds, bird nests and eggs.  I’m always on the lookout for the real thing and over the years I have found abandoned nests of robins eggs, quail eggs, and even a few wild turkey eggs.  I also have a stash of real birds nests in my garden shed.

So, of course, I am always looking for bird decor and craft ideas and wanted to share a few of my favorites with you.  Here are some fun ways to display bird related decor.Bird nest with 3 eggs on a cake plate with metal domed lid.

  1. Start with an imitation bird nest that you can buy or make.  I like to stash birds nests in flower pots, vintage soup tureens, baskets, on top of garden books or nestled in branches.
  2. Use a birdcage to display your spring decor.  It makes a great container for a small plant, fresh or imitation flowers, a stack of books with a nest on top and even a faux bird or two.Bird cage with a nest, 3 eggs and faux bird on books.
  3. Branches that you have pruned from your yard can make a great place to hang faux birds.  You can buy all sorts of birds at the craft store or you can make paper decorated birds to hang.  Add some twinkle lights to the branches for a little sparkle.
  4. Hang a bird garland to display spring sentiments.  Craft the birds out of thin cardboard and paint them.  Glue letters on each bird to say ‘Happy Spring’ or ‘Welcome’.  Attach the birds to twine with hot glue and find a nice place to hang it.
  5. If you have a faux evergreen tree, fill the branches with imitation birds and nests.  Add lights, garland and a bow on top for this natural way to display your spring decor.
  6. Display plain or decorated eggs in baskets, teacups, clear flower vases, pots of faux grass or in your nests.  You can also paint or decoupage your eggs to give them your own special style.3 eggs in a nest sitting inside a teacup
  7. Hang vintage style bird pictures in frames or just use clothespins to clip them to a banner or garland.  I am always on the lookout for vintage Bird books to use.
  8. Display your birds, nests, and eggs under glass.  Use a cloche or glass domed cake plate to display your spring decor.
  9. Add feathers to your decor by putting them in a vase, framing some special feathers or incorporating them into a vignette.
  10. Make a rustic bird wreath out of branches with a nest as the focal point.Faux eggs in a decorated pot with the word Nest.

Once you begin to add bird nests and eggs into your decor it can become addictive.  Although this might be spring inspired I tend to have bird-related decor in my house all year long.  The types of birds will change, but the idea of bird decor doesn’t.  During the summer I might add in birdhouses and robins.  In the fall, I often have duck decoys and turkey collectibles.  In the winter you will see cardinals hanging around.  No matter what the season birds can play a prominent roll in your decor.
